Blizzard, how prepared they were for the reactions to the latest update of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.
In the last nearly 20 years since we met World of Warcraft, the undisputed king of the MMORPG genre, the game has been experiencing a serious loss of players and accompanying harsh criticism.
Its influence on the MMORPG genre is that of a pioneer that we can see in almost every game from Lost Ark to Destiny. In recent years, it continues to make unexplained mistakes without slowing down. Maybe everything happened right before our eyes. As King Terenas Menethil II once said to his son Arthas in one of WoW's most powerful storytelling moments, "No king rules forever, my son."
It is Blizzard's own problem. Despite impressive sales figures, players quickly became unhappy with Shadowlands, an expansion that transports players to an entirely new realm and features fan-favorite characters like Uther, Garrosh Hellscream, and more. The WoW development team closely examined the game and began to remove or change its more questionable content.
The 9.1.5 update of the game saw significant changes to unpopular systems based on Blizzard listening to community feedback, including the ability to freely change Covenants and the removal of Conduit Energy, as well as changes to make the game easier for players with multiple characters.
Blizzard established a WoW Community Council to speak more directly with a broader community and gather feedback. It was announced that Horde and Alliance players will soon be able to participate in group content together (based on positive fan feedback), breaking a long-standing barrier in the game since its inception. Patch 9.2 introduced a new region, raid, and events generally liked by the community, and the testing cycle of the patch showed that Blizzard made numerous positive changes based on player feedback.
We have to wait until April 19 for the next expansion of WoW. What players can expect is currently unknown, but it is clear that Blizzard will not be able to follow the same approach as in the last two expansions.
